Kakamachi

In Ayurveda, Solanum nigrum, commonly known as "Kakamachi" or "Makoi," has been used for various medicinal purposes, including liver protection. According to Ayurveda, Solanum nigrum has cooling and detoxifying properties that help in treating liver disorders. It is also believed to have a "pitta" balancing effect, which means it helps in regulating the "pitta" dosha (one of the three doshas in Ayurveda) in the body. Pitta dosha is associated with digestion and metabolism and is also responsible for maintaining liver function. Excessive pitta in the body can lead to liver disorders such as jaundice, hepatitis, and liver cirrhosis. (1)

Solanum nigrum is also believed to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which help in protecting the liver from oxidative stress and inflammation. The plant is also considered to have hepato-protective and regenerative properties that help in repairing the damaged liver cells. (2)

A study published in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine in 2015 reported the hepatoprotective effect of Solanum nigrum in rats with alcohol-induced liver damage. The study showed that Solanum nigrum extract helped in reducing the liver damage by reducing the level of liver enzymes and improving the antioxidant status in the liver. (3)

Another study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology in 2013 reported the hepatoprotective effect of Solanum nigrum in rats with paracetamol-induced liver damage. The study showed that Solanum nigrum extract helped in reducing the liver damage by reducing the level of liver enzymes and improving the antioxidant status in the liver. (4)

However, it is important to note that more scientific research is needed to validate the traditional uses of Solanum nigrum for liver protection according to Ayurveda. It is always recommended to consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner or healthcare provider before using any herbs for medicinal purposes.
