Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that occurs naturally in all parts of the body. Our body needs these cholesterols to work properly. But having too much in your blood stream, it may attach with other substances in the blood and stick to the walls of arteries called as plaque. Plaque can narrow our arteries and even block them.

Our body needs some cholesterol to make hormones, vitamin D, and substances that help you digest foods. Our body synthesize all the cholesterol it needs. However, cholesterol also is present in many of the foods we eat.

Cholesterol travels in our bloodstream in small packages called lipoproteins. These packages are made of fats (lipid) on the inside and proteins on the outside.

Two kinds of lipoproteins carries cholesterol in your body: low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Having healthy levels of both types of lipoproteins is important.

LDL cholesterol sometimes is called “bad” cholesterol. A high LDL level leads to a build-up of cholesterols in our arteries. (Arteries are blood vessels that carry blood from our heart to our body.)

HDL cholesterol sometimes is called “good” cholesterol. This is because it carries cholesterol from other parts of our body back to our liver. Our liver removes the cholesterol from our body.

High levels of cholesterol in the blood may increase risk of Heart Disease. Our cholesterol levels tend to rise as we get older. Usually there is no signs or symptoms indicating high blood cholesterol, and it can be detected with a blood test only. We are likely to have high cholesterols if members of our family have it, if we are overweight or if we eat a lot of fatty foods.

We can lower our cholesterol by regular vigorous exercise and have more fruits and vegetables. To maintain our cholesterol level under check we might think adding a cholesterol-lowering supplement and Ayurveda formulas in regular use. Although few natural products have been proved to improve cholesterol levels, some might be very helpful. Must check with physician, while considering these cholesterol-improving supplements and Ayurveda formulas.
